RSS Feed Readers

RSS Readers or "News Aggregators" are tools that you use to access the RSS/XML newsfeeds that you wish to subscribe to. These utilities are widely available for free or cheaply, and come in several flavors:

  • Customizable home pages that automatically displays the latest info from your feeds when you open your browser,

  • Web-based services that you login to in order to manage and read your subscriptions,

  • Email client plug-ins that you use inside of Microsoft Outlook or other email programs,

  • Desktop applications that run locally on your computer,

  • and a variety of mobile platforms for handheld devices like PDA's and cell phones.

In additional to these types of third-party reader tools, the next generation of Microsoft Windows (aka "Longhorn") will also have an RSS Reader built right into the windows environment!  In the meantime, for finding an RSS Reader that best suits your web surfing style see the lists below for each of the commonly used flavors.
